about the artist
I work to build vivid, all-encompassing environments into which viewers can escape, and to create brave and clever characters worthy of admiration. I’m drawn to the simplicity of the tools that can be used to mold new realities, and driven by an innate desire to tell stories.
A portion of my work involves creating surreal, nonsensical, and bleak environments in an effort to inspire wonder. The implication is that someone from one of these imagined worlds might view our world in much the same way. For this same reason, I enjoy framing mundane environments as visions of beauty and levity. Other than that, I create work that deals with themes of identity conflict and alienation.
Through the library, I teach drawing classes and summer camps for teenagers. Over the last several years I have been painting murals, frequently collaborating with artists such as Qwynto and Rakn. And I’ve performed live art for a variety of events, including including Memfix, Paint Memphis, Memphis Sci-fi and Fantasy Convention, CLOUD901’s Grand Opening, and Teen Arts Fest. I’ve pasted homelessness awareness comics on walls throughout Memphis and even co-wrote and assisted with the shooting of a short film supporting the Memphis comedy scene. The work that I create is meant to be enjoyed by everyone, not just the privileged few who frequent galleries.
