about the artist
My sculptures and drawings reflect a sensibility that an object stands as a momentary physical manifestation of an ongoing process. I invent strict, repetitive systems for building and accumulating materials, lines, and marks - systems which tend to generate rich and unpredictable forms. I am particularly interested in the scientific field of emergence theory; the single most compelling idea for me is the observation that throughout the natural world, complex phenomena emerge from simple repetitive processes. I strive to manifest this insight as dynamic and engaging works of art, meditations on both human and non-human processes.
While currently working full-time on my studio practice, I have previously been actively engaged as an educator – as Assistant Professor at Rhodes College and as a graduate advisor at MCA – and as an employee of Crosstown Arts, advising the development of their woodshop and shared art making program. More recently, I have created works for public spaces and private collections, including a gateway sculpture for Overton Park, an installation in the new Crosstown Arts Theater, and sculptures for Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, West Cancer Center, and Methodist Transplant Institute, as well as several collections nationally.
