Vitus Shell is a mixed-media collage painter born in Monroe, LA. He holds a BFA from Memphis College of Art and an MFA from the University of Mississippi. Shell’s work addresses the black experience, giving agency to people from this community through powerful images which deconstruct, sample, and remix ideas about identity, civil rights, and contemporary black culture. Many of his pieces comment on the idea that “you are a product of your environment.” “A racist environment will become you,” says Shell.
