Project Overview

The Wave | Tobey Skate Park

[The sculpture is] a symbol of the culture and history of skateboarding.
— Mark Nowell

In October 2012, Mark Nowell installed his interactive sculpture The Wave at the Tobey Skate Park as a part of the City of Memphis Percent-for-Art Program. The work is fabricated in stainless steel and measures 18 x 11 x 8 feet. Nowell's sculpture acts as a permanent landmark and monument for the Skate Park, while also acting as an integral and functional component of the skateboarding area. Nowell was selected for the commission by an artist selection committee comprised of practicing artists, city administrators, project stakeholders, and numerous local skateboarders. As a former skateboarder, Nowell describes his design as “a symbol of the culture and history of skateboarding.”
