Project Overview

Roots and Wings | North Frayser Community Center

The power of this collective identity to build a resilient community reminded the artist of an old nursery rhyme.

When first thinking about the mural for the North Frayser Community Center, Jeff Unthank wanted to illustrate the essential support the Center provides to local families by offering a wide range of programs and services which nurture the mind, body, and spirit. It is a neutral ground away from home, school, and work where citizens can establish a connection with other members of their community and develop a collective identity. The power of this collective identity to build a resilient community reminded the artist of an old nursery rhyme. "For my child/ I wish 2 things/ To give you roots/ and give you wings." It became the inspiration for the mural.
