Artist Spotlight | Brandon James Scott to Design Heights Line Sculpture

The UrbanArt Commission (UAC) is pleased to announce that Brandon James Scott has been chosen to design the Heights Line Sculpture, a significant public art installation for the 1.75-mile Heights Line pedestrian linear park at National Street and Summer Avenue in Memphis.

About the Art

Scott’s design for the Heights Line thoughtfully integrates functional elements like seating, lighting, and a water fountain to create a communal resting area. In addition to these features, the design includes educational components that highlight the rich history of the Heights neighborhood, ensuring the space is not only welcoming but also informative for all who visit. The selection committee, comprised of a diverse group of community members, ensured that the design truly reflects the spirit and needs of the Heights neighborhood. With additional input from a community vote, Scott chosen to bring this community space to life.

About The Artist | Brandon James Scott

Brandon James Scott is an accomplished figurative painter, sculptor, and art educator based in Memphis, Tennessee. Originally from Florida, Scott began his journey in art at a young age, attending art immersion schools and working as a junior art instructor. He holds a BFA from Memphis College of Art and an MA in Art Therapy from New York University (NYU).

In 2024, Scott was awarded the New Public Artist Fellowship by the UrbanArt Commission, which provided him and five others with rigorous training on how to become public artists. The Heights Line Sculpture marks Scott’s debut as a public sculptor and serves as a proof-of-concept for UAC’s New Public Artists Fellowship program.

Scott’s work uniquely blends art and education, with a strong focus on social-emotional development. Beyond his artistic practice, he is committed to creating opportunities for students to engage in art projects. He is currently working towards building an organization that educates, trains, and mentors youth in public art and carpentry.
