On August 28th, the UrbanArt Commission (UAC) hosted the "Brush Up on Healthcare" workshop, a unique event aimed at blending wellness with artistic expression for local creatives.

The event kicked off with an engaging session led by healthcare professional Randy Kostiuk from Church Health Memphis, who provided advice on healthcare options available to artists such as the MEMPHIS Plan.

One of the event activities was the "Life Wheel", where participants assessed their satisfaction across seven key areas of life that influence overall well-being. For a full description of each category, click here.

This exercise offered valuable insights and has shown that improvements in exercise and nutrition had the most significant impact on overall health. The professionals shared that Church Health Center has conducted this activity with over 1,500 new patients, both before and after their initial consultations, reinforcing its effectiveness in identifying areas for improvement.

Participants were encouraged to rate each area on a scale of 1 to 10, reflecting on how satisfied they felt in categories such as spirituality, family/friends, work, and more. The results showed that most people found exercise and nutrition to be the areas where they had the most work to do, but also where they saw the most significant improvements when these areas were addressed. As these aspects of life improved, the ripple effect positively influenced other areas, demonstrating the interconnectedness of overall wellness.

Participants then were encouraged to form S.M.A.R.T. goals that set a healthier standard of living.

In addition to the wellness activities, attendees had the opportunity to tap into their creativity by painting art pieces for UAC's upcoming "Canvas for a Cause" Art Show. This hands-on session allowed artists to express themselves while contributing to a fundraiser that supports future workshops, professional development opportunities, and more for the local arts community.

This healthcare workshop was a powerful reminder of the importance of holistic support for artists, ensuring they have the resources to thrive both creatively and personally. UAC's dedication to offering such programs underscores their commitment to nurturing the talents and well-being of Memphis artists.
