More about Kam and this installation:

I was born in Winstonville, Mississippi, a small town sitting deep in the Delta–land that falls right along Highway 61. That road, famously known as the “blues highway”, has carried many generations of dreamers, creators, and everyday people up to Memphis–each eager for their voices to be heard and determined to create beauty from the barest of resources. I come from that same lineage, and like the ones before me, I chose to rebel against the circumstances at hand. Through visual storytelling, I highlight the beauty that grows within this region and the resilience embedded in Southern life.

Beauty and My People is an exhibition that focuses on honoring the everyday people that make this region beautiful. These portraits and scenes center the faces, bodies, and environments of people who are often overlooked but never ordinary. Ultimately, this work asks audiences to look again—to look deeper. To recognize the seen and unseen beauty that thrives in Southern communities and counter mainstream narratives by highlighting everyday beauty, resilience, and community strength. To honor the people whose lives shape the culture, the art, and the heartbeat of this region. This is my love letter to where I come from and to everyone striving, still.
