BACKGROUND

About Peabody-Vance Neighborhood:
The Peabody-Vance neighborhood is a historically rich Memphis community located between Downtown and Midtown, characterized by a diverse mix of housing options ranging from restored historic mansions to mid-20th-century apartments. Situated within the Memphis Medical District Collaborative, the neighborhood is a hub of educational and medical institutions, small businesses, and cultural assets. It is undergoing revitalization efforts, including plans to address housing needs, support small businesses, and promote community development. 

About the Peabody-Vance Neighborhood Association  

The Peabody-Vance Neighborhood Association is a strong presence in the neighborhood, bringing together residents, business owners, and active community members.  The PVNA is led by Sharon Coleman, a longtime resident, neighborhood business owner, and association President.

About UAC:

The UrbanArt Commission (UAC) works to create opportunities for artists and neighborhoods to connect and shape spaces through public art. Since 2002, UAC has managed the City of Memphis’s Percent-For-Art Program, which allocates funds annually to develop public art in connection to capital improvement projects. UAC also facilitates public art projects throughout the city working with various partners and clients to support artists and new experiences with art.

SCOPE OF WORK

The selection committee has expressed interest in a large sculpture that:

  • Reflects the unique community of Peabody Vance

  • Promotes positivity 

  • Includes designs that will appeal people of all ages
