next Artist Workshop Series TBA for Spring 2025 〰️
Launched in 2023, UAC's Artist Workshops are supported by ARTSMemphis and designed to help Memphis-based artists develop professional skills and gain confidence in public art processes and projects.
Workshops are hosted quarterly at the UAC office space and offer the opportunity of artists to engage with past and present UAC commissioned artists!
UAC workshop goals:
to nurture artists and their understanding of the public art process
to guide artists on what they could refine to secure public art projects
to provide a resource guide for artists with supporting materials, organizations, and other professional development opportunities
uac public art educational workshop video series
session one:
This workshop video session covers the foundational knowledge of public art. Topics include defining public art- what it looks like and how it functions both here in Memphis and nationally, identifying opportunities, understanding the call to artists, and researching when applying for a call. We also hear from Forecast Public Art's Yarlyn Rosario with her presentation on Public Art 101. Watch video.
session two:
This workshop session, led by Memphis-based artist Tony Hawkins, covers the ins and outs of writing a cover letter and resumé, compiling a portfolio, and how and what to research before applying. Tony most recently completed a mural in the Westwood neighborhood and has extensive experience crafting proposals that resonate with all involved.
about session three:
This workshop session, led by Memphis-based artist Tony Hawkins, covers the ins and outs of developing design concepts, gathering and sourcing materials, creating flexible budgets, and scheduling timelines. Tony most recently completed a mural in the Westwood neighborhood and has extensive experience crafting proposals that resonate with all involved.
session four:
This workshop session is a follow up to session three, led by Memphis-based artist Tony Hawkins, who covered the ins and outs of developing design concepts, gathering and sourcing materials, creating flexible budgets, and scheduling timelines. This time, Memphis-based artist Brandon Gaia Marshall will pick up right where Tony left off in the RFP process, covering: site visits, community engagement do’s/dont’s + strategies, managiing expectations, timelines, + budgets, and best presentation practices.
session five:
This final session of our 5-part workshop series will be hosted in a style reminiscent of speed dating, with three smaller stations carefully curated to foster a more personalized and engaging critique experience + offer as many opportunities for artists to participate as possible in our short 1.5 hours session. Our photographers for the evening, Chuck Wilson will be on site to capture professional quality images of up to three existing or in progress works.
This workshop series is supported in part by an ARTSmemphis Artists Capacity Building grant.
