Memphis, TN – July 23, 2024

The UrbanArt Commission (UAC) is thrilled to announce that Daniel Moore has been selected as the artist for the Orange Mound Library & Genealogy Center's sculpture project. Moore's design was chosen from a national call that saw unprecedented engagement from the community, with over 20 members of the selection committee, many of whom are proud residents of Orange Mound. This extensive participation underscores UAC's dedication to involving stakeholders and valuing community voices.

About the Sculpture

The forthcoming sculpture at the Orange Mound Library and Community Center is a tribute to the rich history and vibrant spirit of Orange Mound. Moore's design features multi-generational silhouettes in colors that honor the historic Melrose High School. The sculpture's Double Helix design nods to the genealogy center, while the Osage Orange pattern ties it back to the community's origins. Notably, the number 39 symbolizes the first plot sold to Miss Alice Seggins, marking a significant moment for aspiring landowners who were formerly enslaved.

The sculpture is composed of two monolithic pillars, each with apertures that allow viewers to see portions of the opposite silhouette, representing past, present, and future generations. Alongside the sculpture is a quote from Larry Finch: "This is my heart right here, Orange Mound, Tennessee. There will never be a place like Orange Mound. Everything in this city starts and ends in Orange Mound."

Community Involvement

The large selection committee reflects the community's deep connection to the project and UAC's commitment to engaging local voices. The residents' involvement ensures the sculpture will resonate deeply with the community, honoring Orange Mound's legacy and future.
