Community and Challenges

As a proud member of the neighboring Douglass community, Derikah brought a personal connection to the Chelsea Floodwall project. Throughout the mural’s creation, she received support from members of her church and coworkers at Hemline Theory, who gained firsthand experience helping create large-scale public art.

Despite challenging conditions, including strong winds, intense heat, and curious community members stopping to ask questions, the team’s encouragement helped Derikah stay motivated and bring her vision to life. Their collaboration became an important part of the mural’s story.
