Lawrence Matthews is an artist from Memphis, who works in music, photography, painting, and filmmaking. Matthews received his BFA from The University of Memphis in 2014, and has since shown his work in group and solo exhibitions across the Mid-South. Matthews was the recipient of a 2016 Arts Accelerator Grant from Arts Memphis, and has been an artist in residence at Crosstown Arts. As program director of TONE, Matthews develops impactful programming for black artists in the Memphis area. Matthews’ photography focuses on life in Memphis’s black communities, and the neighborhoods most affected by gentrification, disenfranchisement, and inequitable city planning. His images capture both powerful moments of openness and the haunting reminders of things that once were, laying bare the conflict between remembering the past, cherishing the present, and surviving a future of officially sanctioned neglect and decay.
