John Salvest has created a memorable series of sculptures situated throughout the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts. Located in the restrooms, each sculpture is constructed of an unexpected product made of cast aluminum and paint. The stacked toilet paper sculptures offer an element of surprise and humor to people who enter the restrooms on the three floors of the library. The work plays with our visual and tactile senses while simultaneously celebrating the mundane and everyday.
About the Artist
John Salvest
John Salvest currently lives in Jonesboro, AR and is a Professor of Sculpture at the Arkansas State University. Salvest received a Bachelors in English from Duke University in 1977, a Masters in English from the University of Iowa in 1979, and an MFA in sculpture from the University of Iowa in 1983. Throughout his career as an artist, Salvest has completed numerous site-specific installations, including his donor recognition sculpture at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library in Memphis, TN. In addition to completing several commissions, Salvest has received numerous awards for his artwork. In 2004 Salvest was featured in the Americans for the Arts Public Art Network's Public Art Year in Review. He has also received honors from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts among other awards.
