about the artist
Utilizing a process similar to that of mosaic, I paint, trim, prune, and weave together precious fragments from disparate sources into ornamental, contained landscapes. These works aren’t depictions of nature but instead highly orchestrated collections within a discrete space. A meditative and meticulous process is evident on the surfaces of my work as is the evidence of my hand. Often my collages utilize pattern to affirm flatness while simultaneously alluding to intimate intricate spaces. Sometimes bits of paper are left partially unanchored, curling off the picture plane to become more sculptural. I aim for a perceptual thrill by dancing around object/non-object. When successful, this optical trickery results in imagery that can be tensely jubilant and inviting as well as densely stunted and ambiguous. I’m interested in the alternate dimension of an objectified landscape where time is suspended. The results are taut, sealed spaces that hover between interior and exterior.
As a professional artist and Associate Professor of Art at Rhodes College, I have been an active member of the Memphis art community for nearly 16 years. My work has been acknowledged with commissions from Memphis institutions - among them in Women’s Foundation of Greater Memphis, the Memphis in May International Organization, and Ballet Memphis. I have cultivated a national exhibition record, exhibiting at LAUNCH Gallery and the Masur Museum of Art in Los Angeles, Field Projects in New York, and the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.
